For thousands of years, human beings occupied Hovenweep. The site grew from a hunting camp to a bustling Anasazi village of 2,500 people by the late 12th century. 

The Anasazi developed irrigation techniques, practiced astronomy, and built beautiful stone towers. Then, in the late 13th century, something caused them to abandon their homes at Hovenweep, turning it into the deserted valley we know today.

The remnants of six Anasazi communities still remain at Hovenweep, examples of expert masonry. Explore this ancient, abandoned village on foot, ideally in the spring while the wildflowers are in bloom. 

There are two trails to use, the Rim Trail Loop, and Tower Point Loop.
